ChatGPT Work

OpenAI's agent that runs multi-step work across your apps and devices

Overview

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's push to turn ChatGPT from a question-and-answer tool into something that actually finishes tasks for you. It runs on GPT-5.6 and comes with an embedded Codex agent that can read your local files, pull data from connected apps, browse the web through its own built-in browser, and keep working on a task in the background while you move on to something else. Plugins let you wire in outside apps, and a new Sites feature in beta lets you spin up dashboards and small web apps straight from a chat, without a developer.

It launched on July 9, 2026, rolling out first to desktop and then to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans on web and mobile over the following days. It's not sold as a separate subscription, it comes bundled into the ChatGPT plan you're already paying for, though OpenAI moved workspace-agent runs on Business and Enterprise to token-based pricing on top of the seat cost. Given how new this is, treat early reviews and our own score here as provisional. An agent that reads your files and browses the web unsupervised is powerful, but that's also exactly the kind of feature that needs a few months of real-world use before anyone can vouch for how well it holds up.

Key Features

  • Built-In Codex Agent: Executes multi-step tasks on its own, not just single replies to single prompts.

  • Cross-App Access: Reads data from your local files and connected apps to complete work with real context.

  • Embedded Browser: Uses a built-in browser to visit websites and online tools as part of a task.

  • Background Execution: Keeps working on a task in the background while you do something else, across devices.

  • Plugins: Connects external apps and systems directly into ChatGPT Work for deeper task automation.

  • Sites (Beta): Build interactive reports, live dashboards, and simple web apps from inside a chat.

Disclaimer: this is a newly launched product and pricing details are still settling, confirm current terms on OpenAI's own ChatGPT Work page before buying.

Pros

  • Genuine Multi-Step Agent: Goes beyond chat to actually execute tasks across apps and devices.

  • Bundled Into Existing Plans: No new subscription needed if you're already on ChatGPT Plus or higher.

  • Cross-Device Background Work: Keeps a task running while you switch to something else.

  • Built On GPT-5.6: Backed by OpenAI's newest and most capable model family at launch.

Cons

  • Brand New: Launched days ago, so long-term reliability, security posture, and how it handles edge cases are still unproven.

  • Token Pricing For Teams: Business and Enterprise agent runs bill separately by token usage, making costs harder to predict.

  • Staggered Rollout: Full access across web and mobile is still rolling out plan by plan, not available to everyone at once.

  • Unsupervised File And App Access: Giving an agent access to your local files and connected apps raises real questions about oversight that early adopters should weigh carefully.

What Makes It Unique

  • Background, Cross-Device Agent: Unlike a standard chatbot session, ChatGPT Work keeps executing a task in the background and picks it back up across desktop, web, and mobile without you babysitting it.

Manus

A general-purpose AI agent that goes off and does the task for you

Manus is an autonomous AI agent that takes a task like researching a topic, building a spreadsheet, or writing code, and works through it on its own, browsing the web and running tools as needed, then hands back a finished result. It's less a chatbot and more a virtual assistant you assign work to. It runs on a credit system, so cost tracks how much work each task actually takes rather than a flat seat price.

Usage-based via credits; cheapest paid plan is around $20/mo for 4,000 monthly credits (no flat per-task price)
