Windsurf
An AI-native code editor whose agent can plan, write, and test multi-step changes, now rebranded as Devin Desktop.
Overview
Windsurf built its reputation as one of the sharpest agentic code editors, an IDE where an AI agent (Cascade) could plan, write, and test multi-step changes instead of just autocompleting single lines. Cognition, the company behind the AI software engineer Devin, acquired Windsurf's team and product in 2026 and has completed the rebrand: as of June 2, 2026, Windsurf is officially Devin Desktop. The core editor and keybindings carried over unchanged; the Agent Command Center and Devin Local (a more token-efficient rewrite of Cascade) are new. Pricing carried over unchanged through the rebrand.
Key Features
Agent Command Center: Manage local and cloud agents from one Kanban-style view.
Devin Local: Rust-rewritten local agent that succeeds the original Cascade agent.
Devin Review: Bundled free into every paid tier, with Fast and Comprehensive review modes.
Fast Context & Codemaps: Instant codebase navigation across large projects.
Agent Client Protocol: Runs other vendors' agents, like Codex and Claude Agent, inside the same editor.
Broad Integrations: 15+ integrations including Slack, Linear, Figma, Stripe, and Datadog.
Pricing
Starting price
$20/mo
Free: $0/month. Light quota to code with agents, limited model availability, unlimited inline edits and Tab completions.
Pro: $20/month. Increased quotas, full model availability (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini), free SWE 1.6 and open source models, Devin Cloud agents access.
Max: $200/month. Everything in Pro with significantly higher quotas, built for power users needing expanded usage allowances.
Teams: $80/month base plus $40/month per full developer seat. Everything in Pro, unlimited team members, sharing and collaboration features, centralized billing and admin dashboard, priority support.
Enterprise: Custom pricing. Everything in Teams, highest priority support, dedicated account management, SAML/OIDC SSO, and a dedicated deployment option.
Disclaimer: pricing may change, confirm on Devin Desktop's own pricing page before buying.
Pros
Multi-Agent Visibility: The Agent Command Center gives real visibility into multiple running agents, not just one chat thread.
Free PR Review: Devin Review is bundled into every paid tier at no extra cost.
Token Efficiency: Devin Local is meaningfully more token-efficient than the old Cascade agent, per Cognition.
Open Protocol Support: Supports the open Agent Client Protocol, so it can run other vendors' agents inside the same editor.
Cons
Confusing Rebrand: Just went through a full rebrand from Windsurf to Devin Desktop in June 2026.
Slower Model Rollout: Tends to add new frontier models a step behind Cursor, per multiple reviews.
Validation Gaps: Devin Local reportedly skips some validation steps, like re-running tests after a refactor, that Cascade used to catch.
Big Pricing Jump: The Max tier is a steep jump to $200/mo from Pro's $20/mo, with little in between.
What Makes It Unique
Multi-Agent Control Room: Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) is less a single AI autocomplete tool and more a control room for running several coding agents, yours and other vendors', side by side on one Kanban board.
