Grammarly

Real-time grammar, tone and AI writing help, everywhere you type

Overview

Grammarly is the tool most people already know, and it earns that reputation by being everywhere you write rather than making you copy-paste into a separate app. The grammar and clarity checks are still its strongest feature, and the tone detector is genuinely handy before sending an email you'll regret. The newer AI rewrite and plagiarism/AI-detection tools are useful add-ons but not the reason to buy it.

The free tier is fine for basic proofreading, but Grammarly leans hard on upsells once you're in, and reviewers on G2 and Trustpilot regularly flag intrusive pop-ups and surprise renewal charges. It also only works in English, so if you write in multiple languages you'll need something else alongside it. For English-only writing across docs, email and Slack, it's still one of the most reliable picks around.

Key Features

  • Real-Time Grammar Checking: Catches spelling, grammar, punctuation and clarity issues as you type, across almost any app or browser.

  • Tone Detection: Flags how your writing will read to someone else before you hit send.

  • AI Rewrites: One-click sentence and paragraph rewrites for clarity, tone or length.

  • Plagiarism & AI Detection: Checks text against published sources and flags likely AI-generated content (Plus plan and up).

  • Deep Integrations: Works inside Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Gmail, Slack and browser extensions.

Pros

  • Works Everywhere: Browser extension, desktop app and native integrations mean you rarely have to leave the app you're writing in.

  • Accurate Core Checks: Grammar, spelling and clarity suggestions are consistently reliable, which is the main reason people stick with it.

  • Tone Detection: Flags how a message will land before you send it, useful for anything client- or boss-facing.

Cons

  • Intrusive Upsells: Users on G2 report constant pop-ups pushing Plus, plus a floating icon that can block buttons in some apps.

  • Occasional Meaning Drift: Some AI rewrite suggestions change the intended meaning or strip out personal voice, so you can't accept them blindly.

  • English Only: No support for other languages, which rules it out if you write bilingually.

  • Billing Complaints: Trustpilot reviews cite automatic renewals and slow support as recurring pain points.

What Makes It Unique

  • Ambient, Not Standalone: Unlike AI writing apps you open separately, Grammarly checks your writing live inside the app you're already using, from Gmail to Slack to Word.
